The Real World:
Social and Environmental Issues Affecting Urban Learners (4 credits)
This course focuses on the reality of the urban environment and its impact on students' lives and learning styles. In the “real world” students come to school impacted by poverty, mobility, inter-generational child rearing, refugee and immigrant issues, substance abuse, and violence. In the context of changing demographics, violence, and health issues, teachers will participate in an exploration of how racism, sexism, and the criminal justice system impact teaching and learning in urban classrooms.
